arthur(?): people dresed as pastries dancing in traffic...bleh

I don't know if that's Arthur Miller that opens this program. All I know is the owner of that voice, to me, takes away from my enjoyment of Joe Frank's stuff. He frequently appears in panel discussions, and his improvisations always just bug me.

It's the same passage which Joe attributes to Miller in Last Show.

It's interesting how different people react to material. I've always enjoyed Miller's contributions. He's sometimes a bit sloppy when inventing facts for panel discussions, but his material is engaging enough that it doesn't spoil them for me.

There are a few Debi Mae West passages, on the other hand, which can drive me to a homicidal rage. Not all, or even most of them, but a few. There's one particular three second clip where she laughs explosively and says "oh my god," with a drawn out rising pitch on the "god." I can't begin to explain why, but whenever I hear it I find myself wincing, tensing all the muscles in my back, and clenching my teeth. That isn't to say that it doesn't make for good radio; experiencing that sort of profound emotional response is interesting, so long as one isn't operating heavy machinery at the time. Outstanding. At least now I know. Not to beat a dead horse, but I just can't express how much I have always disliked Miller's contributions. You put it perfectly: sloppily inventing facts for starters. And too much of the "Well of course you know that..." while he's trying to decide what to come out with next. Even his voice has always bugged me. It's because of Miller that I took longer to appreciate any form other than absurd-monologue-over-electronic-loops, because in the Somewhere Out There days any deviation from that format meant I was likely to hear from Arthur.

OK. Rant over. Interesting thoughts about DMW. I know exactly what you mean about her exclamations. Maybe it's because I married a woman who used to do a perfect imitation of the valley girl accent that I'm immune. Spblat 08:35, 18 Mar 2005 (PST)
